Blog & Sound Bites

18th Aug 2011 - Some good news!!

In my previous blogs I have mentioned that one of my biggest bug-bears is negative journalistic reporting and how that filters down to deflate general moral which in turn creates a self-fulfilling prophetic downward spiral. Though that might seem wordy, it appears the same papers are guilty every time; highlighting the negatives and lowlighting the positives. Much to my dismay, today I read the City AM headline, ‘More Misery’. As well as highlighting the worst parts of the weeks unemployment figures they also have a graph of that so well known index that they call the Misery Index. This is a graph which points to unhappiness with the economy. For those of you who can remember The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, surely the concept of a graph to map out misery could only have been contrived by Marvin, the Paranoid Android. Why? Why? Why? I’m left scratching my head. Do they want everyone to be depressed? All this does is reinforce the fear that economic Armageddon is nigh.

Yes unemployment did rise by 38,000 but the number of people in employment rose by 25,000 and in Q1 520,000 new jobs were created by the Private Sector, while 143,000 were lost by the public sector – the intended rebalancing of the economy one might add. I don’t here any papers making a song and dance about that. That for me is good news.

Please, please, please, can we have some positivity. I don’t buy into this dour reporting. A happy nation spends money which means more taxes and financial stability in the main.

It’s a world full of different opinions; please feel welcome to leave yours.
