Project Accountant Job Description

The project accountant is accountable for monitoring the progress of projects, looking into variances, approving outgoing inclusive of expenses, and ensuring that project billings are issued to clients and payments collected. We also recruit interim Project Accountants for projects undergoing surges in activity or ad hoc projects where there is fixed-term requirement.

Principal Duties

• Looking after and maintaining the project reports

• Maintaining all relevant income and expenditure for each project

• Analysing all project expenses and providing commentary

• Looking after project records and contracts to ensure terms are adhered to

• Reviewing current processes for management accounts preparation and streamlining across business

• Liaising with auditors

• Ensuring robust financial reporting across business

• Business Partnering with non-finance managers in order to develop processes and the understanding of financial requirements

• Creating bespoke financial reports

• Developing financial systems along with IT support to make processes more user friendly

Project Accountant Skills & Requirements

• CIMA, ACCA or ACA qualified accountant

• Prince 2 Qualified / Studier

• Process mapping and implementation experience

• Strong systems manipulation skills

• Team management of up to 10 people

• Change management on a large scale

• Very strong technical skills in accounting

• Advanced Excel/systems skills

Remuneration

Salaries for a Project Accountant vary depending on experience and Project size:

• Project Accountants should expect a day rate of anywhere between £250 to £600

• On the permanent side the project accountant salary range is between £50,000 to £80,000

Most Project Managers would look to take the natural step to Financial Controller or Management Accountant with  1 to 5 years solid experience behind them.
